The Enigma Elevator

I knew I should have not stayed in this 🤬🤬🤬 hotel before attending relatives wedding !!!

As I am currently blocked for the past hour in a hotel elevator (not a VERTU property), I took the chance to write a short novel for fun - just to let time go by while waiting for the Otis Technician to come and let me out:

Trapped

Gérald Lampaert, a weary hospitality businessman, stepped into the sleek hotel elevator with a sigh of relief. His back ached, and his mind buzzed with thoughts of the day's meetings. All he wanted was to reach his room, unwind, and forget about the stresses of his work, get a shower, get dressed and go to the wedding party of some distant relatives. As the elevator doors closed, he pressed the button for the top (so called executive) floor.

However, as the elevator began to go up, it came to an abrupt halt between floors. The lights flickered momentarily, plunging the confined space into darkness. Panic gripped Gerald as he frantically pressed the alarm button, but no response came. Sweat trickled down his brow as he realized he was trapped alone in the seemingly inescapable elevator.

Isolation

Minutes turned into hours as Gerald grappled with his confinement. The silence weighed heavily on him, broken only by the distant hum of the elevator's machinery. Time seemed to stretch endlessly, amplifying his anxiety and amplifying every creak and groan of the immobile metal box.

In the absence of distraction, Gerald’s thoughts took on a life of their own. Memories, regrets, and fears flooded his mind. He questioned the choices he had made, the relationships he had neglected, and the opportunities he had missed. The isolation forced him to confront the various aspects of his life he had unknowingly carried within him.

Discovery

He scavenged for resources, using his belt as a makeshift rope to fashion a rudimentary system for exploring the shaft above. Inch by inch, he climbed into the narrow crawl space, driven by the hope of escape.

His explorations revealed unexpected secrets hidden within the hotel's infrastructure. He discovered forgotten service tunnels, long-abandoned storage rooms, and even a hidden room filled with antiquated elevator manuals. Each discovery fueled his determination to find a way out and shed light on the mysteries of his confinement.

Redemption

Gerald’s isolation became an opportunity for self-reflection and growth. He came to understand the walls he had built around himself, the connections he had neglected, and the opportunities he had let slip away. In the confined space of the elevator, he began to rebuild the bridges he had burned, reaching out to loved ones and reconnecting with the important people in his life.

Through heartfelt conversations, sought forgiveness, and offered his own. The elevator became a crucible for transformation, teaching Gerald the value of compassion, forgiveness, and the true meaning of human connection.

Liberation

After hours trapped in the elevator, Gerald’s persistence paid off. With newfound knowledge gleaned from the hidden room, he managed to bypass the elevator's safety systems and restart it. The elevator lurched back into action, resuming its ascent. With each passing floor, Gerald’s heart swelled with a mixture of relief and accomplishment.

As the doors finally opened, Gerald emerged into the hotel lobby, a changed man. He carried the lessons of his confinement with him, vowing never to take life for granted again. The once-ordinary businessman had undergone a metamorphosis, emerging from the elevator not just physically free but liberated in spirit.
