Vancouver, a city renowned for its stunning natural scenery and vibrant urban life, is equally celebrated for its architectural innovations, particularly in the hospitality sector. This article explores the cutting-edge design strategies and architectural marvels that have transformed Vancouver into a global hotspot for hospitality excellence.
Drawing from personal visits and extensive research, I'll take you on a tour of two of the city's most iconic hotels, very different from each other.

The Intersection of Nature and Urban Design: Fairmont Pacific Rim
Located in Coal Harbour close to the waterfront, the Fairmont Pacific Rim stands as a beacon of modern luxury and innovative design. Designed by renowned architect James K.M. Cheng, this 48-story building is a prime example of how contemporary architecture can blend seamlessly with natural beauty and urban sophistication.
One of the hotel's most striking features is the "Forest Screen," a massive public art installation on the southwestern façade. This screen, made of 9,500 square feet of perforated stainless steel, was inspired by a photograph of North Vancouver’s majestic rainforest. The intricate perforations create a captivating illusion of trees and light, offering a unique visual experience that reflects the natural surroundings while enhancing the building's exterior aesthetics.
James Cheng's architectural vision extends beyond aesthetics. His work on the Fairmont Pacific Rim is a testament to the principles of "Vancouverism," a design philosophy that emphasizes slender towers to preserve views and light, along with podiums that promote street-level interaction. This approach not only contributes to the city’s skyline but also fosters a sense of community and accessibility at the street level.
The hotel's design includes a blend of residential and commercial spaces, integrating seamlessly into Vancouver's urban fabric. The building’s slender form allows for expansive views of the surrounding mountains and waterfront, maximizing the natural beauty visible from within the hotel.

Revitalizing Historic Buildings: Rosewood Hotel Georgia
Nestled in the heart of downtown Vancouver, Rosewood Hotel Georgia stands as a testament to both timeless luxury and the rich heritage of Canada's Pacific Northwest. Recently reopened after an extensive renovation, the hotel unveils a blend of contemporary comfort and classic elegance of the Roaring Twenties, paying homage to its storied past and the vibrant spirit of Vancouver.
Vancouver-based design firm Ste Marie Studio, led by designer Craig Stanghetta, embraced Rosewood's ethos of "lived-in luxury", ensuring that every space exudes personality and character.
Stanghetta emphasized the importance of localization, a hallmark of Rosewood hotels worldwide. While infusing Pacific Northwest influences into the design, such as subtle nods to the region's natural beauty, the team avoided overwhelming the space with overtly regional themes. Instead, they opted for light-touch elements that complement the overall aesthetic, ensuring harmony with the hotel's sophisticated ambiance.
The lobby, now a focal point of the hotel experience, welcomes guests with its elegant marble accents and plush furnishings. Artfully curated local artworks adorn the walls, celebrating the city's artistic heritage and offering guests a glimpse into its vibrant arts scene.
Rosewood Hotel Georgia's commitment to "A Sense of Place®" is evident throughout the redesign. Inspired by the Pacific Dogwood, British Columbia's provincial flower, silver leaf-painted glass accents grace the interiors, further connecting guests to the hotel's unique location. Local artworks curated by a nearby gallery further enhance this connection, offering not just a stay but an immersive cultural experience.
